NYC Education extraordinaire: Haiti’s children of God

Once again, from beyond the traditional four walls of education, the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) school system has yet another remarkable journey unfolding.  This time from the spirit, courage and perspective of the Haitian population here in the New York City area.  It goes without saying that New York’s rich mosaic of international cultures, races, customs and traditions is among the most diverse in the world.

But within that beauty, just over a year ago  – on January 12, 2010, to be exact – people throughout the world were in shock to learn of the catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti and nearly destroyed the island country.  When the dust finally settled, Haiti had suffered massive destruction on multiple levels, including the total collapse of its school system.  As a result, a number of Haitian children — many of whom were orphaned due to the earthquake – migrated to New York City.  In their quest to pick up the pieces of their lives, they persevere by continuing their education in the NYC public school system.
